I was born in London and from a very young age always loved drawing and painting and knew that I wanted to be an artist. I studied at Harrow School of Art, and at Bath Academy of Art. Good drawing is very important to me and underpins most of the work I now make.
In 1989 I moved to Suffolk and after years of working as an illustrator and designer re-discovered printmaking.
My main focus has always been etching. I have exhibited work in London, but now show mainly in Suffolk. My subject matter varies but I am inspired by nature, which seems to have an inherent mystery and dark side which I attempt to convey in my prints. I will often use my imagination to transform a natural image and take it on a stage further.
Printmaking excites me as it offers infinite possibilities to experiment; with etchings I use quite intense precise drawing in a representational way, whereas collagraphs are a good foil for the elaborate and lengthy etching process; with these I tend to produce more spontaneous, abstract, colourful prints. Generally I have a plan, but each print process and even some of the mistakes made can dictate the outcome; I enjoy this relaxed approach as it allows successive printings to find their own level rather than being forced. I produce small editions of etchings, usually about twelve prints. I also produce monoprints, relief prints, drypoint, and collage and occasionally combine some of these processes to create the desired result.
